Romeo Trafficking: The Love Story No One Tells

Updated: May 3, 2021

When you swipe left or right on a dating app, would you ever think that your match could be a trafficker? What about when you meet someone for a first date at a bar or a coffee shop? Have you ever thought that date could lead to becoming a victim of sex trafficking?

For most people, the answer would be no. The phrase ‘sex-trafficking brings about images of white vans, kidnapped children, and smuggled trips out of the country. The idea of the movie “Taken” comes to mind - girls alone in a foreign country, being taken advantage of. While these images tell a true story in some cases, in others - it could not be farther from the truth.

In reality, traffickers often utilize social media and the internet to form relationships and connections with young girls. This can be described as “romeo-pimping.”

Romeo pimps use love, connection, and promises of comfort to lure young women into the sex trafficking industry. They will begin by treating girls like a girlfriend. They will purchase gifts for the girl, take her on dates, and work to gain her trust. Once this trust is achieved, Romeo pimps will begin to isolate their victims. Isolating victims means removing connections to family, friends, and loved ones. This isolation allows the pimp to create an environment where the victim is entirely dependent on him. In this isolation, brainwashing can begin. Once brainwashed, victims are often forced into prostitution to provide for the pimp and themselves. Any refusals to support their “family” can lead to abuse - both physical, verbal, and emotional.

Education is one of the key ways to protect yourself and your loved ones from Romeo pimps. Studies show that the average entry age for child prostitution is 12 years old. With individuals becoming victims of sex trafficking every thirty seconds, it is important to take action now.
